Founded in 2022, SMD Semiconductor was established in response to the growing global demand for chips that power the technologies we use every day — from smartphones and smartwatches to cars, home appliances, and medical devices. As 5G, AI, IoT, and autonomous tech advance, so does the need for smarter, faster semiconductor solutions.

Leveraging Sarawak’s strategic location, skilled talent pool, and strong infrastructure, SMD aims to build a thriving ecosystem for semiconductor innovation. As a new player in the industry, they recognise the need for a strong digital presence. The website plays a key role in introducing the company, communicating its capabilities, and showcasing its role in the global digital transformation.

Looking ahead, SMD Semi’s long-term vision is to position Sarawak as a regional leader in advanced semiconductor solutions by 2030, contributing to global progress in technology.

To support SMD Semiconductor’s vision, they collaborated with SOL Digital and successfully launched a revamped website ahead of IDECS 2024, meeting all deadlines and project requirements.

The refreshed design delivered a modern digital presence that aligned with SMD Semiconductor’s corporate identity. The new website is built with a CMS-friendly structure, allowing the SMD Semiconductor team to update key content sections in-house. This provides greater flexibility, reduces reliance on external developers, and supports their long-term digital growth.

the challenge.

We learned a lot throughout the process of working on the website design. One of the first steps was revamping the existing site with a more modern, technology-driven layout. While it served its purpose well, it didn’t fully reflect SMD Semiconductor’s innovative direction or technological edge.

In addition to the design transformation, we were also working within a tight timeline — with only three weeks to complete and launch the homepage ahead of IDECS 2024 in October. Throughout this process, we focused on ensuring that the content remained relevant, clear, and informative.

Visually, the goal was to create a modern and sleek design that reflected technological advancement. While the earlier versions looked clean and professional, it lacked the innovative feel SMD Semiconductor was aiming for.

There was also a difference in design direction. While the team explored a more creative and visually dynamic layout, the SMD Semiconductor team leaned toward a cleaner, more corporate look. Aligning both approaches to meet the project goals was an important part of the process.

On the technical side, the website needed to be easy for SMD Semiconductor’s internal team to manage — without relying on developers. To achieve this, we used a user-friendly CMS that allowed them to update content on their own, especially in sections that required frequent changes.

Faced with a tight IDECS 2024 deadline, we adopted a fast and focused workflow. Content writing, design, and development ran concurrently to save time, with tools like Figma streamlining collaboration and approvals. This approach enabled us to launch the homepage on schedule without compromising quality.

To achieve a modern tech look, we took inspiration from industry websites—incorporating dark themes and gradients to convey innovation while ensuring a clean, professional feel. We then refined the visuals to suit SMD Semiconductor’s preference for a more corporate tone, without losing the sleek, modern edge.

For ease of content management, the site was built on WordPress with an easy-to-use builder, allowing the SMD team to update content independently, without needing technical help.
